Studies Reveal How It's Possible To Reverse MS Through Diet

By Liliana Mills

Multiple Sclerosis is a debilitating, chronic disease that affects the nervous system of the brain and the spinal cord. The human body's nerve cells contain an insulating layer along the outside called myelin, and the disease attacks the myelin, causing it to malfunction and the nerves to misfire. New technology and research has determined that it may be possible in some cases to reverse MS by following a specific diet and with vitamin therapy.

The symptoms of multiple sclerosis can vary, but generally include neurological problems, such as with balance and gait. This can include problems with vision, muscle tone, spasms and tightness of the muscles. There are also cognitive, or mental types of problems that can occur, including depression or mood disorders. The most common sign is a loss of muscle tone, numbness and issues with walking.

Recent research has been testing the effectiveness of diet changes on the MS patient and overall environment changes, both to help prevent the disease and help after it is diagnosed. The Paleo diet has been suggested as a possible way of life for sufferers to follow to get some relief. It is comprised of grass fed meats, strictly organically grown produce and other natural, whole types of food, not processed. Fish with no additives or growth hormones are also part of this diet.

The Paleo Diet may help by supplying larger amounts of the essential B vitamins, which can help protect the nervous system and the immune functions of the body. This type of diet is also high in iodine and Omega 3 fatty acids, which are essential to cell growth and regeneration.

Specific vitamin therapies, especially with adding in additional Vitamin D, has shown very promising results in dealing with the ravages on the body done by multiple sclerosis. One study showed, that interestingly enough, that females were more prone to the disease than men, and especially those born after the winter months, when the mother was not as likely to have sun exposure on a regular basis. The relationship between how close to the equator the mother resided seemed to make a difference, as well. The sun is the greatest natural provider of Vitamin D that can be found.

Removing damaging substances from the diet can also aid in protecting and renewing the cell damage. The worst offender is the artificial sweetener Aspartame, which can be found in many processed diet products, especially soft drinks. It can cause damage to the central nervous system by eventually breaking down the cells that are located in the brain, as well as the whole body.

While Aspartame is the most damaging, there are others out there that can cause damage, as well. Many preservatives, dyes, and flavorings in processed foods may be causing higher instances of disease and damage to the human body. The modern diet that consists of convenient, preprepared foods may be causing a lot of problems for the body.

Changing the diet and eliminating processed foods may help reduce the risk factors for this debilitating disease and may help reverse MS in some patients. Following the Paleo diet with fresh, whole and natural foods that are not processed or have additives and adding extra Vitamin D to the everyday diet can surely help the overall health of the mind and body.
