Understanding The Basics Of A Vision Tester

By Tracie Knight

Vision or sight testers are apparatus used to test various properties in the eye. Eye testing can be done voluntarily by people who feel that they need it done, or it may be a mandatory exercise. It becomes mandatory when the profession or job one needs requires them to have a good vision. Such jobs may include being a pilot, public driver, doctor, and military personnel. A vision tester may be used at the time one applies for the job or occasionally after some time or both.

The device comes in a variety of colors, shapes, and designs. There are many manufacturers of these devices worldwide resulting in many models and designs. Latest models include several useful features that make them easier and convenient to use. The complexity of devices varies from simple basic models to room-sized models that require a whole room for installation.

Latest makes are made in a way as to work under a number of conditions. Some of the conditions are binocular, near, distance, nighttime, daytime, and monocular. Lighting is provided by light emitting diodes that are usually built into the gadget. Key physical elements on most apparatus include bases, bodies, controls, eyepieces, and handles. Each element has its own task. For example, when in use support is firm support is provided by the base.

All circuitry the appliance contains is enclosed in the body. Plastics are the most used materials in construction of bodies though other substances might be utilized. Handles offer support needed to carry the apparatus from area to another. It is recommendable to hold handles with one arm and bases with the other arm when carrying the device. It must be kept in properly insulated substances away from moisture, water, and direct sun beams.

There are many tests that can be accomplished using sight testers including near and long sightedness, visual acuity, depth and color perception, lateral phorias, and peripheral view. In short sightedness, one is unable to see or read words at a close range. The machine places words or letters at varied virtual distances from the person under examination. The person should then look through the eyepiece and tell what they can see.

Color testing is mostly concerned with two or three main colors and their shades. Text is placed against various backgrounds, mainly green, red, gray, or their shades. Individual under test is required to read it or state its color. Sometimes the text is presented in different colors. Test for long sightedness also involves placing letters against backgrounds of different colors. One should see the sharpness of the letters as same regardless of the background. Long sightedness occurs when one sees the brightness or sharpness to be changing with change in background.

Peripheral sight is the ability of one to see things on the sides when their eye is focused in front. The testing device is able to shift the position of the text one is required to read to different angles of the eye. There are standards in place that guide all the tests that are tested.

The price of the device varies depending on the level of complexity and features that come with it. The simple ones go for a few dollars while complex ones may cost thousands of dollars. The wide variety accommodates the varying financial capabilities of people.
