Must Haves For Traveling Other Than A Portable Oxygen Tank

By Estelle Larsen

All of the severe conditions that a person can suffer from always involve a major organ that the body needs to function properly. The lungs are the usual target of serious diseases. When this happens, the person can die instantly but there are also others who have survived but they need to have constant air supply for them to continue breathing.

One thing that can be considered fortunate is the innovations for medical facilities in the past years. The portable oxygen tank is one product of such innovations. And these devices have allowed those who are suffering from lung condition to freely move from one place to another instead of being stationary on one place.

When choosing a device to supply air, you first need to determine whether you need the continuous flow or the pulse flow. Continuous flow of oxygen means that the device will continue to supply the lungs with oxygen regardless if you are inhaling or not. The pulse flow on the other hand, will only supply air when it is triggered by inhalation.

Tanks that have the pulse flow mechanism are installed with a conserver. Conservers have the capacity to regulate the oxygen that is given to the body so that no air would be wasted. But there are times when those who are using the pulse flow device also needs to use the continuous flow especially when sleeping. The breathing when you are asleep is shallow and it might not be enough to trigger the pulse flow in the oxygen tank.

Those who have a portable tank can travel. But you have to be sure first if you are allowed. In some cases, their conditions are too serious for their physicians to allow them to travel. There are also things that you must not do even if you do have a portable tank

Asking permission from your attending physician prior to traveling is essential so that you can have the necessary papers which you will need. They can also give you pointers on what to do in case of an emergency and what are the things to prepare. You will be bringing several documents regarding your medical condition as well.

You need to secure a document for your portable tank. You can ask for a statement of purchase from where you brought it. To save you the hassle, you can use the receipt that you have.

List every phone number that you need. One should be the contact info of your doctor including emergency contact. You should also include numbers from the establishment where you got your oxygen tank. Identification cards are also important so be certain that you are going to bring more than one.

You also need to make room for your medications. Make sure that you will be bringing extra doses. This will be preventive measure in case your return got delayed. And you also have to secure a statement from your physician if you are traveling by plane. This would allow you to use your equipment while you are inside the plane.
