Fascinating Facts About Anesthesia Services

By Hilda Durham

The human body is a marvel and a complete enigma all at the same time. It can function all on its own without any external help, except on very serious cases that needs special medical intervention. On cases that deal with the matter of life and death, it is essential that one acquires anesthesia services before being subjected into any kind of invasive procedure.

The word speaks for itself and the many wonders that it is capable of. It actually is a combination of Greek words an and aisthesis, which means without and sensation. Put them together and you get the word anaisthesis, without sensation, which is commonly known in the medical field as anesthesia.

It is a form of medical proceeding that is characterized by one of three things or all of them at once. These include muscle relaxation, analgesia, and amnesia. Its administration will leave your body paralyzed so that it also stops all the involuntary actions of the body that might interfere with the invasive procedure.

It is also analgesic, which means it drives away any form of pain during surgery on the specific part. It is fairly painful if you accidentally cut your finger with a knife, so the pain made by purposely slicing a part open must be a thousand times more painful. It is for this reason that every operation never starts without an anesthesiologist. It also induces amnesia, so that you will not have any recollection of what happened during your operation.

The thought of going through a procedure sounds downright scary, so amnesia also serves as an anxiety reducing drug. Most people are afraid of this said procedure, but its administration is made as safe as it possibly could by the careful calculation of dosage and monitoring of medical professionals called anesthesiologists.

Anesthesiology, as with most medical branches, has several different kinds. One is called the general anesthesia. It is the kind where the patient is thoroughly knocked unconscious and will have no idea of the surgery from beginning to end. This type is used when a surgery is to be done in a very sensitive spot which might take more than a few hours.

The second type is called regional anesthesia. This is often confused with local anesthesia because it also just affects a part and does not really knock the patient out. The only difference is that it affects a far more wider region of the body that the former. There are two known kinds of the regional category, the peripheral regional and the central anesthesia.

The peripheral numbs a specific bundle of nerves and affects an entire area, such as an entire arm or leg. The central type is injected into the cerebrospinal fluid. This is a common procedure for women who give birth, and it goes by the term epidural.

The most serious and perhaps the one that needs constant monitoring and extra care is the general anesthesia. In this type the patient is totally knocked unconscious and will have no recollection of anything whatsoever. This is done at the start of complicated operations that may take longer periods to finish.
