Information on Microdermabrasion - Non Invasive Procedure

By Mats Sumellin

There is a method for rejuvenation of the skin that is gaining acceptance in recent years called microdermabrasion. This noninvasive treatment is painless, and most of all, affordable. Those who would like some skin enhancement but lasers, injections or other cosmetic procedures are worrisome, it is a good option.

Microdermabrasion can soften fine lines and wrinkles, decrease pore size, help smooth coarsely textured skin, reduce superficial hyper-pigmentation (age spots), and decrease the appearance of scarring. The procedure actually makes it easier for your skin care products to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and help build collagen which gives skin its youthful appearance.

Skin is exfoliated using specially designed equipment for the microdermabrasion process. Dead skin on the surface is removed using this procedure.

The crystal microdermabrasion device consists of a compressor that draws in air through a hand-held wand. A vacuum is produced as the wand makes contact with a patient's skin. Dead skin cells are removed from the top layers of the skin as they collide with the aluminum oxide crystals. A separate tube on the wand simply sucks the air along with the dead skin cells and crystals into the machine.

Diamond-tip microdermabrasion uses the same vacuum technology and hand-held wand, but there aren't any crystals moving through the tip. The dead skin cells are removed buy the diamond tip in this technique, and then vacuumed up the same way. Different kinds of tips are selected based on the type of skin the patient has, and how uneven the texture is. Crystal microdermabrasion is a little more comfortable that diamond-tip, but they have the same result for the patient. It is also usually better for sensitive skin.

The skill of the treatment provider can improve upon the already significant effects of microdermabrasion. Multiple treatments are usually suggested in order to get the most from this technique, skin texture and type will determine how many are needed. After the first treatment is completed, a clearer picture of the overall treatment process will be planned out, and implemented, depending on skin condition among other factors. Patients in many cases are delighted after they see the effects that the first session brings, but for a comprehensive treatment for all skin concerns, more visits are usually necessary. In most cases, every several months a patient should have another session in order to have the effects be ongoing. Individuals who happen to have very sensitive skin can also benefit from this process, as the device can be set up in order to cater toward their specific skin type.

Side effects do result at times from microdermabrasion, although they are usually minimal from this non-surgical treatment. Some skin trauma does occur at times since it blasts crystals at the skin at a high rate of speed, this does have a reaction but it's not long lasting. Typically, some redness, tightness and very light bruising will occur along with possible sensitivity. This is normal and will only last several hours. Mild abrasions sometimes occur, and at times even a bit of bleeding. Anaesthetics are not necessary with microdermabrasion, no dangerous chemicals are involved on the sensitive skin on your face, and there are minimal risks involved. This process is considered to be very safe, especially when you compare it to chemical agents or laser processes.
